Former N.Y.P.D. Sergeant Sentenced to only 3 Years for Raping Step Daughter

During an emotional sentencing at the Bronx County Hall of Justice on Monday, Vladimir Krull, a former police sergeant who was convicted of sexually abusing his girlfriend’s teenage daughter on three occasions, did not look at the complainant as she made a tearful statement to the judge.

Lester B. Adler, the acting Bronx Supreme Court justice, sentenced Mr. Krull to three years in prison for abusing the girl, who was 13 when Mr. Krull first kissed her on the mouth in September 2013, according to the district attorney’s office.

In January, a jury convicted Mr. Krull, 39, of eight criminal counts covering three encounters. Those included two instances of sexual intercourse with the girl — once in her home and once in his vehicle — and one encounter in which he demanded oral sex in his vehicle after taking the girl to a father-daughter breakfast at her school.

“I used to feel like I had endless options,” the victim, who is now 16, said. “Now I feel limited.”

Mr. Krull, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, kept his eyes mostly on the table in front of him while his ex-girlfriend and her daughter spoke. When the judge asked if he would like to say anything, he offered two words: “No, sir.”

The eight criminal convictions against Mr. Krull — two counts of rape, two counts of committing a criminal sexual act, three counts of sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child — will result in less prison time than the Bronx district attorney had asked for.

“The defendant horrifically abused the trust of this family and engaged in sexual acts with a child,” Darcel A. Clark, the Bronx district attorney, said in a statement just after his January conviction. “He now faces prison time for his depravity and I hope his conviction reinforces the message that we do not stop until we get justice for the most vulnerable of victims.”

Acknowledging that the defendant had never been charged for misconduct on the job, Astrid Borgstedt, the assistant district attorney, said on Monday that he was “not above the law” and argued that he should serve three five-year sentences for a total of 15 years.

Mr. Krull worked in the Police Department for 12 years, according to Roger Blank, his lawyer. He has been held at the Manhattan Detention Complex since his conviction in January.

Mr. Krull’s ex-girlfriend said that learning of her daughter’s abuse had shattered her self-confidence and left her with situational depression.
